wild zero and other

movies i saw lately.

Wild Zero

Woooooooooooooooooohaaaaaaaaaaaa.

The only thing cooller than this movie is the fact that the band in it are real.

It took the Japanese to make the greatest rock and roll / gangster / hermaphrodite love story / zombie movie of all time. (All because Troma never made a movie starring the Ramones, I guess.)

Too much cool. The flaming exhaust pipes. The way Guitar Wolf is never without his guitar. Every line of rock n roll philosophy. (“Love has no borders, nationalities or genders!” Delivered screaming.) The great hair. The exploding heads. The psycho in the wig and hotpants. The magic picks. The sword guitar destroying the UFO.

Trash like you’ve never seen.

Recommended. *Especially* stoned.

Van Helsing

Mindless quasi fun. Aspires to be maundering idiot drivel. Kate Beckinsdale wears a heavy accent and tight corset. Hugh Jackman kills things and gets wolfy. The sidekick has all the good lines. Somehow the ending, which in any movie where you cared about the leads would have been devastating, was really empty.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

Mos Def was really cool for the first twenty minutes. Sam Rockwell was fun for the first twenty minutes. The bits that were from the book were mostly pretty good. The bits that weren’t were sort of okay. Hopefully a new generation will read the books instead.

Azumi

Felt like it was straight from the pages of a comic. All the main characters looked like comic book characters. Orphans trained as assassins go off beyond the mountain to carry out the mission they have been trained their whole lives for. Really harsh scene early on when their final test is to pair up with their favourite trainee and kill them. Generally fun martial arts slaughter, though very dark. Azumi seems to be a school girl with a sword.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Inventive, intelligent, well done, twisty love head trip. Carey and Winslett are actually good, cast against type. Liked it.

Van Helsing: I thought this was dreadful, and I enjoyed the Mummy movies from the same director.

Eternal Sunshine: isn’t Kate Winslet usually pretty damned good? I’ve seen her in Heavenly Creatures, Holy Smoke, Quills, Iris, and Hamlet, and I wouldn’t say that Eternal Sunshine was a stand-out performance compared to the others. Mind you I haven’t seen Titanic.

Btw, you should see The Aviator if you haven’t already.

I think I’ve only seen her in Titanic and Hamlet. Eternal… drastically increased her range from those.

Pearce, you really need to see Wild Zero in an appropriate state someday.

You’ve not seen Heavenly Creatures? Woah dude, that movie rocks. You might appreciate seeing her pee on Harvey Keitel in Holy Smoke. 😉

Wild Zero sounds great, but if the appropriate state is required I might have to wait a while…

Now, I realise this is spam, but because I like the weird machines on the page (entirely in Chinese) it links to, it amuses me enough to leave it.
